A year ago tonight Ben and I sat at home preparing for the birth of our first baby. I was scheduled for an indcution the next morning at 6:00am. We left for the hospital early on the morning of September 24th. It was weird leaving for the hospital as a couple, knowing that we would come home as a family of three.
We took one last picture of me pregnant and headed to the hospital...Ben made a detour through Hardees...it was comical. We got to the hospital, checked in, started pitocin, and the doctor broke my water. The contractions started...
and I soon got an epidural!
Labor progressed. The doctor told us it was going to be a long day and night.
And then the nurse checked me. We were talking about my bad heartburn and if the baby would have a head full of hair. And the nurse said, "oh no, this baby has no hair". And then she got a look on her face (that I still remember). She proceeded to say, "You will never believe this. I am feeling your baby's bottom! Your baby is breech." From this point on it was a whirlwind. The doctor confirmed Walker's position with an ultrasound and he said, "We're headed to the OR". Once on the operating table, the doctor was paged to a delivery. He was gone what seemed like an eternity. But he soon returned and we were ready for delivery.
At 4:01pm on Thursday, September 24th, 2009 our baby was born. I waited anxiously for his first cry...and we all cried. My friend was the "baby nurse" and gave me updates as she checked him over. Ben paced between me and baby Walker. And then he brought me our baby boy. I will never forget seeing my baby for the first time, his soft skin, his sweet eyes, his perfectly pink lips. I will never forget the surge of emotions. Love at first sight.
I gave Walker his first bath.
We had many visitors. Family, friends, our pastor, and coworkers came to celebrate the birth of our little baby. We welcomed our baby into such a loving family and such great friendships.
We didn't get a lot of sleep (not complaining - Walker soon became an awsome sleeper) and we tried to the point of exhaustion with breastfeeding. Ben learned to change diapers and swaddle. We were like children fighting to hold the baby - we just couldn't get enough of our sweet boy! We were blessed with Walker and we were so in love! We left the hospital and began our life as a family of three.
What a sweet birth story. It has been so special to watch him grow over the past year. He is so sweet and adorable! Happy 1st Birthday Walker:)
